Colophon

This site was designed and built to reflect the aesthetic of a manuscript (minus the beige/tan parchment colors I and others have used for other projects).

Typography

The typography carries the primary burden of the “manuscript” feel.

  • Serif: EB Garamond. A faithful digital reproduction of the 16th-century typeface by Claude Garamont. It is used for all body text and headings, providing the classic humanist feel.
  • Monospace: JetBrains Mono. A modern coding font used for metadata, shelfmarks, and technical details. It represents the “digital humanities” aspect—the intrusion of code into the ancient text.

Palette

The colors are derived from the materials of a scriptorium:

  • Iron Gall: (#2A2626) The dark, slightly rusted black of aged ink.
  • Vellum: (#F9F7F1) The warm, organic white of prepared calfskin.
  • Rubrication: (#A63437) The red ochre used for titles and initial capitals (from ruber, red).
  • Verdigris: (#407F7F) The copper-green pigment often found in Byzantine illumination.
  • Plummet: (#E3DED1) The faint lead or silver point used for ruling lines.

Technology

The site is a static application built with modern web standards.
